Hey everyone! Our names are Nick, Ava, and Tolly. For our seventh grade science class, we are doing a Challenge Based Learning project (CBL) about a noninfectious disease of our choice. Our group decided to focus on common food allergies and how we can help improve the lives of people that have these types of allergies in our community, Los Angeles. We decided to focus on this topic because it is very common for people to suffer from food allergies. Even one of our group members has a food allergy and cares a lot about this topic. He is not alone. Approximately 60 million Americans have a food allergy of some kind. 90% of food allergies are to these foods: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. As result of these foods being the main food allergies, we decided to focus only on them and the people that have an allergy to these foods. Some allergic reactions to these food can be mild or become deadly so it is important to try to save the lives of people with severe food allergies as well as prevent others from having lesser, but sometimes painful symptoms. We feel that not enough is being done to improve the lives of people with food allergies. Our goal is to help make a change for the better in the community for people who have common food allergies and help reduce the amounts of allergic reactions that they have. We hope that by the end on this project, we have changed many lives for the better.
